History of the Doomsday Clock

As seen in: Mutually Assured Destruction #

June 1, 1947: Scientists invent the Doomsday Clock, a symbol representing how close humanity is to destroying itself. TIME LEFT: 1 hour to midnight

June 2, 1947: Scientists wake up the next day and are like, yeah duh, it was a metaphor the whole time, no way we thought the world was going to end in one hour, that’s dumb. TIME LEFT: 59 minutes to midnight

September 24, 1949: The Soviet Union tests its first nuclear bombs. The clock is adjusted closer to midnight than ever before, as a chilling reminder of how close we are to total destruction. TIME LEFT: 2 minutes to midnight

September 25, 1949: Oh, it’s Daylight Saving Time! Phew. TIME LEFT: 1 hour, 2 minutes to midnight

December 10, 1980: A prank becomes popular among Ronald Reagan’s White House staff to put the nuclear launch button on his seat like a whoopie cushion. It’s dangerous, but hilarious. TIME LEFT: 30 minutes to midnight

May 12, 2003: The song “Where Is The Love” by the Black Eyed Peas is released. The whole world stops and listens and we all remember that, hey, sure we have our differences but we’re all in this crazy thing called life together, trying to live as best as we can and that’s gotta count for something. For the first time, there is peace. TIME LEFT: 100 years to midnight

May 12, 2003: The song “Where Is The Love” ends and we all remember what we were mad about. TIME LEFT: 5 minutes to midnight
